URL channel is based on the URLs of your site, for example:
December 26th, 2009 at 9:36 pm1 – tracking income between two different websites
URL channel 1: http://www.siteA.com
URL channel 2: http://www.siteB.com
2 – tracking performance of specific directories in your site
URL channel: http://www.siteA.com/category1
As for custom channel, I use it for:
1 – Tracking ad formats so I create a channel for medium rectangle, for leaderboard, for ad links, etc. This way, I know which ad format works best for me
2 – Tracking ad placements – I create custom channels for above the fold, for the side bar, for below the fold, for rectangle wrapped in content, for rectangle not wrapped in content. This way I know which placement works best for me
3 – Tracking topics — since my topics are across directories, I use custom channels for tracking each type of page I have
4 – Tracking colors — I routinely change colors of my ads to see which works best so I also create separate channels for each
Channels are a great way of testing which ad format and placement works best for you. It is a great tool for testing
